Seemed a pretty down to earth blokeand a bit of a lad,on the town town too, happy.to chat about anything even football unlike many players.
He got a few Forest players and staff to come in too.

Apologies, was getting Charles confused with Fashanu who was a Barnados boy.

Completely forgot as well that Charles had a pretty decent spell for Villa back when they were actually a a top 5 club.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I remember a few years ago that someone found an old home programme from the late 70s or very early 80s where Charles was a mascot.

As Tricky Pablo has already said, he was from the area and was West Ham.

From memory I think he was also either in care or a Barnados home as a kid so that tough upbringing may have been a factor in his drinking.

He was the Forest and then Derby right back when they were decent top flight sides and got a couple of England caps then went to Benfica when Souness signed half of the English top flight.

Hopefully he's turned his life around.

I used to cut his barnet when he played for Forest.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
He did a bit of coaching at Lincoln a couple of years ago until he got the chop.

He owns Charles Restaurant in Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. Apparently he is a friendly proprietor who dishes out signed photos of his football days to customers who recognise him.

I saw Gary Charles play for Benfica away against Dynamo Bucharest before he signed for us, they should have asked me for a scouting report!

Speaking of Ruddock, I remember one of Harry's plan Bs. Sticing Ruddock up front once

Not the worst back four I've seen. Away to Charlton Minto dailly breen and lomas. Shocking. And we had winterburn I Pearce and glen Johnson on the bench

"Gazza went off on a stretcher so he was as good as sent off anyway. "

Did Spurs play on with 10 men then ?

Fucking hell, so a back 4 of Charles, Rio, RUDDOCK and who?

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I went to school with Gary and can say he was a really nice fella. He grew up in Canning Town as a diehard West Ham fan.

At school we used to play on the muddiest pitches you could imagine where you could hardly move; but Gary would skip over the surface like bamby; other teams couldn’t get anywhere near him. If you saw him then, you’d soon know he had a god given talent to play football.

I bumped into him from time to time when he came back down to London when playing for Forrest. The early signs of alcoholism are now obvious to me, as he seemed to change into a different person when he had a drink in him, you could see he just wanted to get smashed.

Despite all the demons he faced, he was always a top bloke, and really looked after his old mates from Canning Town.
Addiction is a terrible thing, and I hope he finds, or has found a way to beat it.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I'll see your Gary Charles and raise you, a ROB JONES.

Back in the day when Redknapp still let people turn up at the training ground and watch, I went over there with my old man and we'd just signed the ex- England international fullback.

Imagine our surprise to see our new signing HOBBLING AROUND ON ON CRUTCHES.

"He joined West Ham United, on non-contract terms, on 17 July 1999, and featured for them in a single Intertoto Cup game and featured in his second and what would be his final professional career match for West Ham United which lasted 45 minutes as a result of re-aggravating his knee, he retired shortly after this."

My only memory of the useless cunt was that own goal.

Wasn't Song also playing in back 4 or am I a few years apart?

Any Old Iron, I don't think Redknapp senior gave much of a fuck after the transfer had gone through.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
I'd agree that he was the worst signing made for us by 'Arry, and that's saying something when you look at the list of has-been's he brought in. It was obvious to me at the time that Redknapp could not have seen him play recently and must have done a deal with a dodgy agent. The guy was a fucking disgrace and Redknapp must have realised from the day the bloke turned up that he'd made a monumental rickett.

Re: The legend that was Gary Charles
Tottenham retained 11 players and came back to win.
1-0 down and 10 men it wouldn't have happened.
Diabolical refereeing. The tackle on Charles was a yellow at least and the one where he put his studs in someone's chest was a nailed on straight red.
